An Epi Pen is an auto-injector loaded with epinephrine, which is used when one is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction. A single Epi Pen for anyone above age five contains a dose of 0.30 mg of adrenaline (epinephrine) while a Jr. dose for children below age five contains 0.15 mg of epinephrine.
People who are aware of their severe allergies often carry multiple Epi Pens. While one dose is normally enough to stop the anaphylactic reaction, up to 20 percent of people require a second dose.
